A long sandy beach in one of the most beautiful gulfs on the island
Biodola beach is certainly among the best sandy beaches on the entire island of Elba. Situated in an enchanting gulf on the northern coast, it is surrounded by the Capannone, Colle Pecorara and Serrone delle Cime mountains, which form a magnificent natural amphitheatre around it. The beach measures almost 600 metres in length, is exposed to north-westerly winds and is protected from southern winds, and is particularly recommended when the Levant, Sirocco and Southern Italy are blowing. The fine, golden sand, made up of quartz and mica, is bathed in turquoise, crystalline water, while the lush vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub that reaches right up to the beach frames this splendid scenery. From the left side of the beach you can follow a path immersed in the lush vegetation that runs along the coast, reaching the two splendid beaches of Lamaia and Porticciolo. Crossing, however, a small passage between the rocks you reach Scaglieri beach. The beauty and location of Biodola beach have made it one of the most famous and popular destinations on the island, in fact there are numerous accommodation facilities in the surrounding area. The beach is particularly suitable for children as it is very easy to access, the depth of the seabed increases gradually and the sand allows the little ones to play safely. At the same time, it is also highly appreciated by young people, thanks also to the many services found there: bars, restaurants, umbrella, sun lounger and pedal boat rentals, as well as the possibility of water activities such as windsurfing and scuba diving.
What to do in and around Biodola
Biodola is a hamlet of Portoferraio, the most populated municipality on the island of Elba, from which it is just 4 km away. Although Biodola is a small place surrounded by the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub, it is a very established tourist resort. There are, therefore, hotels, campsites, residences, restaurants and all the services that visitors may need. Nearby Portoferraio, on the other hand, is a town rich in history and culture, with a charming historic center, two Napoleonic villas (Napoleon, in fact, chose this very place for his exile) and several fortresses. Portoferraio also offers a large number of shops, artisan workshops, renowned restaurants, bars where you can enjoy excellent aperitifs and nightclubs, including the famous Club 64 nightclub. Throughout the year, the city hosts numerous events, including theatrical performances, live music, and cultural initiatives, in addition to the traditional Ferragosto celebrations, with plenty of music and a fireworks display.
How to get to the beach
Biodola beach is very easily reached by taking the provincial road that connects Portoferraio to Procchio. After passing the first 3 km after the port of Portoferraio, you come across the detour to the beach. A new and large parking lot has recently been built, suitable for accommodating the large flow of visitors that arrive here during the high season. The beach is also well connected by a convenient bus service, which departs from the port of Portoferraio.
